Organic chem Flashcards
What are Alkanes?
Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons( compound of carbon and hydrogen)
What does saturated mean?
Joined by a single bond.
What is a Homologus series?
A ‘family’ of hydrocarbons with similar compounds with similar chemical properties due to the presence of the same functional group.
Name the first four Alkanes.
Hint: M.E.P.B
Methane
Ethane
Propane
Butane
What does Meth mean?
Meth = 1 carbon atom (Carries on with the rest so: 2 = Eth 3 = Prop 4 = But
State the chemical formula for Methane.
CH4 (4 needs to be small)
State the chemical formula for Butane.
C4H10 (Numbers need to be small)
State the formula for Alkanes.
CnH2n + 2
Note: Numbers must be small.
What are Alkenes?
AlkEne E E E E
Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons.
State the formula for Alkenes.
CnHn
What does unsaturated mean?
It has a double bond
E.g. C=C instead of C-C
