Nervous system Flashcards
What are the main parts of the nervous system?
Central Nervous system.
Peripheral Nervous system.
What does the Central nervous system consist of?
The brain and Spinal cord.
What is the Peripheral nervous system?
A system of nerve fibres which connect the Central nervous system to the rest of the body.
What is the main role of the Peripheral nervous system?
To carry information between the body’s limbs, organs and Central nervous system.
What are the main functions of the Central nervous system?
Take in sensory information.
Process information.
Send out motor signals
What are the function of Nerves?
Nerves carry electric impulses around the body.
What are Neurones?
Neurones are the individual cells which make up a nerve.
What is the function of Neurones?
Neurones carry electrical impulses.
What makes up a Neurone?
Nucleus, Axon, Dendrite and Nerve ending.
What are the main 3 types of neurones?
Sensory, Relay and Motor.
Sensory neurones
Detects a stimulus and transfers it to brain or spinal cord.
Long neurones.
Relay neurones
Connect different neurones together
Motor neurone
Transfers nerve impulses from CNS to muscles or glands.
Can be long.
What is a reflex arc?
A pathway which controls involuntary body functions.
What are reflex actions controlled by?
The spinal cord.
