organic analysis Flashcards
what is the fingerprint region
area unique to each compound, used to spot the difference between different compounds. 1500 - 500
what is the test for alkenes
shake alkene with bromine water, orange to colourless
test for haloalkanes
1.add NaOH and heat
2.acidify with HNO3
3.add AgNO3
precipitate formed
Cl = white
Br = cream
I = yellow
test for alcohols
- add acidified potassium dichromate and heat
colour change from orange to green
2 tests for aldehydes
- warm with fehlings solution
blue to brick red colour change - warm with tollens reagent
silver mirror forms
test for carboxylic acids
- Add Na2CO3 (sodium carbonate)
CO2 released and effervescence
what is mass spectrometry and how does it work
used to find the relative molecular mass of organic compounds
compounds are ionised, accelerated by a negatively charged plate which then travel through the drift region and are finally detected by a negatively charged plate.
what is fragmentation
many peaks due to isotopes
