Organelles Flashcards
What is the function of the NUCLEUS
The function of Nucleus is
- Contains DNA which determines the type of proteins a cell makes.
- Plays a part in manufacturing proteins.
- known as the ‘control centre’
The structure of the nucleus is the largest organelle, typical oval shaped
What is the function of the NUCLEOLUS
It produces ribosomes and plays a part in manufacturing proteins.
The structure of the nucleolus is a small sphere shape inside the nucleus
What is the function of the MITOCHONDRIA
The function of the mitochondria is:
- To take in nutrients and break them down to produce energy through the process of respiration
- Provides the cell with ‘ATP’
The structure of the mitochondria is a spherical or elongated structure with a double membrane.
What is the function of the RIBOSOME
The function of ribosomes is:
-Synthesis (make) proteins as the amino acids are joined together at the ribosome which results in proteins.
The structure of the ribosomes are very small and spherical and attached to the membranes.
What is the function of the VACUOLE
The function of the vacuole is:
- To ‘store structure for nutrients
- Break down waste
- It helps sequester waste products
The structure of the vacuole is a membrane- bound sac
What is the function of the LYSOSOME
The function of the lysosome is:
- Digest food and waste
- Break down worn-out cells and material that are taken into the cell.
- It stores enzymes.
The structure of the lysosome is a small spheres that contains enzymes.
What is the function of the GOLGI APPARATUS
The function of the Golgi apparatus is
-It modifies proteins and packages them in vesicles either for secretion from the cell or storage.
The structure of the Golgi apparatus is flattened, membranous bags stacked on top of each other.
