Organelle Flashcards
Mitochondria
Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic - Produce energy through cellular respiration
Nucleus
Eukaryotic - managing the cells genetic information
Nucleolus
Eukaryotic - produce and assemble the cell’s ribosomes
Nuclear Envelope
Eukaryotic - Separates the contents of the nucleus from the cytoplasm and provides the structural framework of the nucleus
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Eukaryotic - to produce proteins for the rest of the cell to function
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Eukaryotic - To make cellular products like hormones and lipids
Ribosome
Eukaryotic (80s) & Prokaryotic (70s) - a micro machine for making proteins (protein synthesis)
Lysosomes
Eukaryotic - act as the digestive system of the cell - degrade material and digest obsolete components of the cell
Cell Wall
Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic - Provides structural strength and support
Cell/Plasma Membrane
Regulating movement of substances in and out of the cells
Golgi Apparatus
Eukaryotic - transporting, modifying and packaging proteins into vesicles for delivery
Chloroplasts
Eukaryotic - used for photosynthesis
Vacuole
Eukaryotic & Prokaryotic - Helps sequester waste products (holds cell sap in plant cells)
Vesicle
Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic - storage sacs for transportation
Cristae (Mitochondria)
Extensions of the inner membrane - more surface area
Matrix (Mitochondria)
Semi-rigid material containing protein, lipids, ribosomes and DNA
Outer Membrane (Mitochondria)
Controls entry and exit of materials
Slime Capsule
(Prokaryotic) Prevents cell from drying out and makes it slippery
DNA (Nucleoid)
(Prokaryotic) Single circular DNA which floats free in the cytoplasm - no introns (non coding DNA)
Flagellum
(Prokaryotic) Rotates to propel prokaryote
Plasmid
(Prokaryotic) Circular DNA loops - can code for antibiotic resistance
Matrix (HIV)
A layer of proteins situated immediately under the outer envelope
Nucloid (HIV)
Contains genetic material required to reproduce
Telomerase (HIV)
An enzyme that catalyses the production of DNA from RNA
Attachment Protein (HIV)
Proteins involved with binding
