Organ Systems Flashcards
A group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions.
Organ Systems
Provides protection Regulates body temperature Contains sensory receptors Synthesize vitamin D Prevents water loss
Integumentary System
Provides support and protection
Site of hemopoiesis (blood cell production)
Stores calcium and phosphorus
Provides sites for muscle attachment
Skeletal system
Produces body movement
Generates heat
Muscular system
Carries and responds to sensory stimuli
Activates muscles and glands
Helps control other systems of the body
Responsible for consciousness, intelligence and memory
Nervous system
Transports and filters lymph (interstitial fluid) - removes excess fluid
Initiates immune response (when necessary)
Lymphatic system
Conditions air coming into the body
Exchanged gases between lungs and blood-stream
Allows for vocalization
Respiratory system
Digests food (mechanically and chemically)
Absorbs nutrients from food
Expels waste products
Digestive system
Filters the blood to remove waste products
Helps to maintain body homeostasis
Urinary system
Produces sex cells (gametes)
Produces the means by which oocytes and spermatocyte unite
Produces sex hormones
Provides environment for growth of embryo/fetus in females
Reproductive system
Cells and glands that produce hormones which regulate various bodily functions
Endocrine system
Standing upright, feet together
Head up, looking straight ahead
Arms down to sides with palms forward
Anatomical position
