Organ System Overview (L1) Flashcards
Integumentary System
Components: Hair, skin, nails
- Forms external body covering protecting deeper tissue from injury
- synthesizes vitamin D
- location of sensory receptors, sweat, and oil glands
Skeletal System
Components: cartilages, joints, bones
- Protects and supports organs
- Provides a framework for muscles
- Blood cells are formed within bones
- Stores minerals
Muscular System
Components: skeletal muscles
- Allows manipulation of environment, locomotion, and facial expression
- Maintains posture
- Produces heat
Nervous System
Component: Brain, sensory receptor, spinal cord, nerves
- fast-acting control system
- responds to internal and external changes by activating appropriate muscles and glands
Endocrine System
Components: Several Glands, Testis/Ovary
- Glands secrete hormones that regular body processes (growth, reproduction, nutrients used by body cells)
Cardiovascular System
Components: heart, blood vessels
- transport blood (carries oxygen, nutrients, hormones, CO2, waste, etc)
- heart pumps blood
Lymphatic System
Components: lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, spleen
- Picks up fluid leaked from blood vessels and returns it to the blood
- Disposes of debris in lymphatic stream
- Houses white blood cells involved in immunity
Respiratory System
Components: Nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs
- Keeps blood supplied with O2 and removes CO2
- Gas exchange occurs through the walls of the air sacs of the lungs
Digestive System
Components: Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Small/Large Intestine, Rectum
- Break down food into absorbable nutrients that enter the blood for distribution to body cells
- Indigestible food exits as feces
Urinary System
Components: kidney, ureter, urinary bladder, urethra
- Eliminates nitrogen-containing waste from body
- Regulates water, electrolyte, and acid-base balance of the blood
Reproductive System
- production of offspring
- Ovaries produce eggs, testes produce sperm
- Mammary glands produce milk to nourish newborn
Name the Organ Systems Responsible for the Life Function:
- Maintaining Boundaries
- Movement
- Responsiveness
- Digestion
- Metabolism
- Excretion
- Reproduction
- Growth
- Integumentary System
- Muscular + skeletal (body movement)
Cardiovascular (substance within the
body) - Nervous System
- Digestive System
- Digestive (supplies nutrients to cells)
Respiratory (supplies oxygen to cells) - Digestive (remove solid food waste)
Urinary (removal of metabolic
byproduct)
Skin (removal of waste in sweat) - Reproductive System
Regulated by Endocrine System - Regulated by Endocrine System
