organ/organ system Flashcards
alimentary system
(digestive system)
- allows for the intake of nutrients into the body and the excretion/disposal of wastes
cardiovascular system
made up of the heart and blood vessels, which provide constant blood circulation
endocrine system
- made up of glands that provide chemical control over the bodily function
what are the 11 organ systems?
- alimentary system
- cardiovascular system
- endocrine system
- hematopoietic system
- integumentary system
- lymphatic system
- musculoskeletal system
- neurologic system
- reproductive system
- respiratory system
- urinary system
hematopoietic system
made up of blood and blood-forming tissue
integumentary system
made up of the largest organ of the body (skin)
lymphatic system
- made up of a network of vessels and glands that are responsible for the body’s immunity
- also responsible for the circulation of intestinal fluids
musculoskeletal system
made up of bones, muscles, and connective tissues that provide structure and movement of the body
neurological system
- made up of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves and controls many organ systems by electrical impulses
reproductive system
made up of organs and glands in the body that are responsible for producing offspring
respiratory system
consists of airways going from the nose to the lungs and provides the exchange of gas like oxygen and carbon dioxide
urinary system
- made up of the kidney and urinary bladder
- important in the removal of toxic waste from the body and maintaining proper water and electrolyte balances
homeostasis
- all organ systems function synergistically to maintain a balanced, normal state in the body
- the body can correct abnormalities and restore homeostasis (indicates a symbiotic relationship)
