cellular anatomy and structure Flashcards
cellular membrane
the outermost structure of the cell that forms an envelope around all of the intracellular parts
centriole
- 2 cylindrical structures found near the nucleus and Golgi apparatus
- lie perpendicular to each other
- important during the mitosis process
cytoplasm
a colorless fluid that gives the cell its mass and suspends all of the intracellular organelles
Golgi apparatus
a specialized series of flattened sacs and vesicles usually found near the nucleus which acts to ‘package’ cellular products
Lysosome
- small, enzyme filled sacs
- enzymes dissolve particles they come in contact with
mitochondrion
- the powerhouse of the cell
- has a double membrane; the inner membrane extends into folds called cristae
nuclear membrane
a membrane which forms a porous envelope around the nucleus
nucleolus
small, dense structures within the nucleus that are made up of RNA and protein
nucleus
- a large, intracellular organelle that’s formed of loosely woven chromatin
- the chromatin is made up of DNA
ribosomes
- tiny, spherical organelles that attach to the membrane of the R.E.R.
- responsible for the production of proteins
R.E.R.
- network of canals and flattened sacs throughout the cytoplasm of the cell; appears rough due to the ribosomes attached to it
smooth endoplasmic reticulum
a complex network of canals and flattened sacs throughout the cytoplasm of the cell; there are no ribosomes, therefore it is ‘smooth’
vacuole
- small, empty, cytoplasmic spaces within the cell
- may contain for or waste products to be removed from the cell
