- Begins to move food from side to side (ROTARY MOTION)

- IND finger feeding
- Begins to use thumb and tip of index finger (neat pincer)
- bangs spoon, mouths spoon, and plays with spoon
Oral motor skills, 13-15 months
- starting to close lips while chewing
- learning to make controlled bites of HARD FOOD (COOKIE)
Self-feeding skills, 13-15 months
- DIPS spoon
- brings spoon to mouth and obtains some food, but spills most d/t wrist inversion

- improved control of liquid within mouth

- holds and drinks from cup IND’ly

- chews food completely w/ ROTARY MOVEMENTS
- chews wide variety of textures

Utensil use progression
10-12 months: banging/playing/mouthing spoon
13-15 months: dipping spoon (can bring to mouth, but spills most food)
18-24 months: scoops food and IND’ly self-feeds
36 months: pierces food w/ fork (soft food) and brings to mouth
3-4 years: can serve self at table w/out spilling (spoon and fork use)
4-5 years: can use child-safe knife to spread soft substances
5-6 years: can use child safe knife to cut food w/ supervision
5.5-6.5 years: can use fork and knife together to cut food, pierce food, and bring to mouth (entire process of self-feeding)
Chewing progression
7-9 months: up/down chewing (munching)
10-12 months: begins moving food from side to side (start of rotary chewing)
18-24 movements: chews food completely with rotary movements
Cup-drinking progression
4-6 months: may begin sippie drinking
7-9 months: may begin drinking from an open cup w/ max A and a lot of spillage
16-18 months: holds cup w/ 2 hands and drinks from cup IND’ly
30 months: drinks from open cups with one hand
3-4 years: holds cup with one hand while holding straw with other to drink
