Causes of ulcers
Trauma
Infections - viral, bacterial, fungal
GI - crohns, ulcerative colitis
Immunological
Carcionma
Recurrent aphthous ulcers
oral ulcers that is immunologically generated
Minor aphthous ulcers
<10mm in size
heal within 2weeks with no scarring
found on non keratinsed mucosa - not ging or hard palate
round oval shape with red halo
Major aphthous ulcers
> 10mm in size
can lasts for months and can heal with/without scarring
Found on non keratnised or keratinised mucosa
oval or irregualr shaped
Herptiform ulcers
least common
heal within 2 weeks
multiple small ulcers on non keratinsed mucosa
Oro-genital ulcers
3 episodes of mouth ulcers in 1 year
at least 2 of - genital sores, skin ulcers or eye inflammation
Predisposing factors to aphthous ulcers
Stress
Hormonal level flucatations
Mechanical injuries
Genetic predispoition
Systemic diseases
Viral and bacterial infections
Investigations for ulcers
Blood tests - iron, folic acid, vit B12
Allergy testsing
Liver function test
GLucose tests
Biopsy if needed
Treatment for ulcers
avoid dietary triggers
correct blood deficiencies
non topical steriods - chx mw or benzadamine mw
Topical steriods - betamethasone mw or beclometasone inhaler
What is an ulcer
it is a breach in the epitheliu that exposes underlying connective tissue
Mucocuatneous casues of oral ulceration
Lichen planus
Pemphigoid
Pemiphigus
Erythem multiforme
