Oral mucosa Flashcards
Mucosa is..
Outer layer of protective lining which communications with the exterior of the body
Mucosa functions
Protection-
of the underlying structure
connective tissues
blood vessels
nerves
Sensation-
Taste
Pain
Secretion-
Parotid gland
Submandibular gland
Sublingual gland
Minor salivary gland
Primary tissue types
Epithelial tissue
Connective tissue
Muscle tissue
Neural tissue
Oral cavity mucosa consists of
Stratified squamous epithelium.
Fibrous connective tissue
Epithelium tissue
1 or multiple layers of cells that form a continuous lining (mucosa in oral cavity) covering surface that communicates with the exterior
How do epithelium cells get from the basal layer to the keratin layer?
Epithelium cell life begins at the basil layer by dupilcation then moves up through the prickle layer where epithelial cells under go morphological changes (become flattened)
eventually they shed through the surface or form a distinct keratin layer
Turn over to completely renew cells
Gingiva-40-60 days
Cheek- 25 days
Skin- 50-75 days
Basal cell layer
has mostly keratinocytes but also some non-keratinocytes
Non keratinocytes tend to have a white halo and will not participate in maturation
Prickle cell layer
Cells mature and migrate to the surface through the prickle layer they become flattened, lose nuclei and shed off
or form the protective layer (desmosomes)
Keratin layer
What parts of the oral cavity are keratinized?
Orthokeratin?
Parakeratin?
Not all parts of the mouth are keratinized
It is a protective layer and its present where functional demand
- attached gingiva
- tongue
-hard palate
Orthokeratin - a layer of dead cells (lost nuclei)
Parakeratin- incomplete nuclei dissolution.- shows some kind of disturbance in the maturation process of epithelium.
Fibrous connective tissues contain…
fibroblasts
collagen fibres
blood vessels
nerves
immune cells
Can be loose or dense
