ORAL* E145 Flight Controls Flashcards
How is elevator controlled
Mechanically
How is pitch trim achieved?
Electrically controlled and electrically actuated horizontal stab
What doe spilling elevator disconnect do?
Releases the free panel from the jammed one, allowing elevator control
Can you reconnect elevator disconnect in flight?
No, only on ground, by maintenance
Indication when elevator is disconnected?
Amber light on center pedestal
With elevator disconnected, which side has stick pusher?
Left only
If elevators disconnected is autopilot available?
No
How many tabs each elevator?
2…1 spring and one servo. Servo tab is outer
What do servo tabs do?
Deflect proportionately in opposite direction to reduce pressure required
What do spring tabs do?
Same as servo tabs in that they move in opposite directions but increase movement with airspeed. At low speeds spring tab remains neutral
What do markings on tail in front of horizontal stab mean?
2 degrees for each mark and are a scale…4 degrees up or down
How many channels in HSCU? (Horizontal Stab Control Unit)
2
Can autopilot use both channels of HSCU?
No, only main channel
Is Hor. Trim rate fixed or variable?
Variable according to airspeed
During takeoff config check, where should trim be?
In the green
How many motors on Horizontal Stab Actuator?
- One works at a time
When is pitch trim automatically commanded?
With autopilot on OR when speed brakes are used?
Pitch trim up is inhibited when?
Stick Shaker
Pitch trim button authority?
Left over right. All over autopilot. Backup vs. handhweel…1st used
If main and backup channels in HSCU command at same time was happens?
One is either temporarily disengaged or can be inactive for remainder of flight, depending on part number of the unit
If only half of trim switch is held what happens?
If half for more than 7 seconds that switch becomes ions
How many seconds will any trim switch work?
3 seconds, then beep
Horizontal Stab stalled and excessive load event
If pitch trim switches are engaged while HSA is stalled the PIT TRIM INOP….when stall ceases message will go away. If switches used more than 16 seconds while stalled the HSCU will turn off the main or backup and message will be permanent
BACKUP SYS CUTOUT button is turned off…will autopilot work?
Yes, if main HSCU system is operative
The pitch trim green band on EICAS has what range?
4 to 8 degrees, nose up
How are ailerons controlled and moved?
Mechanically controlled, hydraulically actuated, which HYD 1 and 2
Will ailerons work if you lose both HYD systems?
Yes
Aileron Disconnect used…can it be reset in flight?
No, on ground only
If ailerons disconnected can autopilot be used?
No
Which side of aileron system has roll trim and feel unit?
Right
How is roll trim performed
By changing the ailerons neutral position
What does AIL SYS INOP mean?
Hydraulic power to Ailerons is out
How many rudders are there?
2, forward and aft
How are rudders controlled and actuated?
Mechanically controlled, hydraulically actuated
The PCU (power control unit) controls rudder with how many actuators?
2, 1 for each hydraulic system
How can rudder systems be shut off manually?
Buttons on overhead. 1 each for system 1 and 2
How can rudder systems 1 and 2 be shut off automatically
With the speed switch and hard over protection
With no hydraulics does rudder still work?
Yes, but it is sluggish and takes more force
Both rudder systems work below what airspeed?
135…system 1 stops above 135 knots
If rudder system 2 fails above 135?
System 1 takes over
Rudder Hard Over Protection is?
Activates in case of runaway rudder…more than 5 degrees of deflection and both engines are above 56% N2 130 lbs of force on the rudder pedal
Rudder defection limits?
15 DEGREES ON GROUND
RUDDER OVERBOOST Means?
Both system active above 135 knots
Gust lock protects what?
Elevator
Gust lock works how?
Electric Pins at the elevator.
Gust Lock light on glareshield means?
Gust lock in motion, or failure
Flap control and actuation?
Electric
How many flap motors?
2, both operate all with flexible shafts
Can one motor operate all flaps?
Yes, at half speed
If flap asymmetry is detected was happens?
Flaps are disabled
Flap handle is in different position than flaps when airplane powered up…what will happen
Flaps don’t move until the handle is moved
How many spoilers?
2 each wing…the outer panels are the speed brakes in flight
When will ground spoilers deploy?
WOW, wheel speed > 25 knots, and thrust idle
Will pitch trim be auto with auto pilot off and speed brakes deployed?
Yes.
To open speed brakes…
Thrust lever below 50 degrees and flaps 0 or 9
VFE Flaps 9
250
VFE Flaps 22
200
VFE Flaps 45
145
How to check elevator after gust lock removed?
Control wheel full forward and aft
Max flap altitude
20k
Max airspeed without retrimming after T/O
160 knots
