Oral Cavity and Pharynx Flashcards
What is the function of the oral cavity?
ingestion of food
preparation for digestion
food chewed by teeth
saliva from glands assist in forming food bolus
what is the main function of the tongue?
forming words during a speech
pushing food into the pharynx when swallowing
what nerves innervate the tongue muscles
the bulk of the muscles are innervated by the hypoglossal CN XII
what nerves does general sensation
anterior 2/3 CN V3 (trigeminal nerve, mandibular branch) lingual nerve terminal
posterior 1/3 CN IX (glossopharyngeal nerve) lingual branch
what nerves does special sensation
Anterior 2/3, CN VII, Facial nerve
Posterior 1/3 CN IX, Glossophyarngeal
Root of the tongue both sensory and taste - CN X, vagus nerve
what is the palate?
is the arched roof of the mouth and is the floor of the nasal cavity
consists of 2 regions
Hard and soft
Describe the hard palate?
Concave in shape
Anterior 2/3 of the palate
Consists of the boney skeleton:
- Palatine processes of maxillae
- Horizontal plates of palatine bones
Desribe the soft palate
Posterior 1/3 of palate
Suspends posteriorly from the hard palate
Consists of fibromuscular tissue
Function
- helps with swallowing
- elevates to stop food going into the nasopharynx
What nerve supplies the soft palate
the soft palate is innervated by the CN X vagus nerve except for tensor veli palatin, CN V3
