Oral Cavity Anatomy Flashcards
what are the muscles of mastication supplied by?
CN V3 (3rd branch of trigeminal nerve)
what are the 4 muscles of mastication?
temporalis, masseter, lateral pterygoid and medial pterygoid
what does the lateral pterygoid do? (other muscles of mastication dont)
aids opening of mouth (only 1 out of 4 muscles needed as gravity helps)
what is the superior 1/2 of the oral cavity supplied by?
CN V2
what is the inferior 1/2 of the oral cavity supplied by?
CN V3
what nerves supply the motor supply of the Gag Reflex?
CN 9 and CN 10
what supplies the sensory nerve supply of the Gag Reflex?
CN 11
what are the 3 salivary glands in the head?
parotid gland, sublingual gland, submandibular gland
what supplies the parotid gland?
CN 9- glossopharyngeal
what supplies the submandibular and sublingual gland?
CN 7- facial nerve
what supplies the taste and general sensation in the posterior 1/3 of the tongue?
CN 9- Glossopharyngeal
where is the posterior 1/3 of the tongue located?
oropharynx
what supplies the taste in the anterior 2/3rds of the tongue?
CN VII- Facial Nerve
what supplies the general sensory of anterior 2/3rds of the tongue?
CN V3- 3rd branch of trigeminal nerve
what type of muscles of the tongue control position of tongue?
extrinsic muscles
what type of muscles control size of the tongue? (shortening and lengthening)
intrinsic muscles
what are the 4 intrinsic muscles of the tongue?
styloglossus, genioglossus, hypoglossus, palatolossus
SGHP
what are the styloglossus, genioglossus and hypoglossus innervated by?
CN 12- hypoglossal nerve
what is the palatoglossus inervated by?
CN 10- vagus nerve
what are the 2 main types of muscles in the pharynx?
outer layer- constrictor muscles
inner layer- longitudinal muscles
what innervates the constrictor muscles?
CN 10- Vagus nerve
what innervates the longitudinal muscles?
CN9 and 10
glossopharyngeal and vagus nerve
what level is the Upper Oesophageal Sphincter located?
C6 vertebrae
same level as thyroid
what other than position is the difference between the upper and lower oesophageal sphincters?
the upper oesophageal sphincter is anatomical and the lower oesophageal sphincter is physiological
at what level does the oesophagues enter the stomach?
T10
where it passes through the diaphragm and enters the stomach
where does the IVC pass through the Diaphragm?
T8
where does the Aorta pass through the diaphragm at?
T12
