Abdomen Anatomy and Physiology Flashcards
what is the peritoneum?
a continuous membrane that lines the abdominal cavity walls and organs
what is a peritoneal cavity?
space between the viceral and parietal layers
what is an intraperitoneal organ?
an organ covered in visceral peritoneum
what is a retroperitoneal organ?
an organ partially covered by peritoneum
what does an organ with mesentery mean?
it is an intraperitoneal organ covered all around thus providing flexibility
examples of retroperitoneal organs?
pancreas, kidneys, ascending and descending colon
examples of intraperitoneal organs?
stomach, gallbladder, liver, transverse colon, small bowel and spleen
examples of organs with mesentery?
sigmoid colon, small bowel
what is an omentum?
fold of visceral peritoneum
where is the greater omentum?
hangs off the greater curvature of the stomach and passes over the small bowel
where is the lesser omentum?
extends from the liver to lesser curvature of the stomach and 1st part of duodenum
the lesser and greater omentum split peritoneal cavity into 2 sacs, what connects these sacs?
omental foramen
what does the greater sac contain?
subphrenic and hepatorenal recess
what pouches do males have?
recto-vesicular pouch (between rectum and bladder)
what pouches do females have?
pouch of douglas (recto-uterine) and the vesico-uterine pouch
