Oral Cavity Flashcards
Mouth
Lips (anteriorly) to oropharyngeal isthmus (posteriorly)
Vestibule
Oral Cavity Proper
Oral Cavity Proper - Vestibule
Btw the lips and cheeks externally and the teeth and gums internally
Labial Frenula
Cheeks - Buccinator covered with buccopharyngeal fascia
Boundaries of Oral Cavity Proper
Roof = Palate
Floor = Mucous membrane lying over sublingual glands and the mylohyoid
Tongue fills it when mouth is closed
Nerve Supply
Sensory - Maxillary and Mandibular divisions of V
Teeth
Deciduous and permanent
Tongue
Divided into anterior 2/3 (within oral cavity proper) and posterior 1/3 (within oropharynx)
Musculature innervation of tongue
Innervated by CN XII (hypo)
Intrinsic
Extrinsic
- Genioglossus, hyoglossus, styloglossus and palatoglossus (CN X)
Mucous membrane of tongue
Sulcus terminalis and foramen cecum
Papillae (filiform, fungiform, circumvallate, foliate)
Sensory innervation of tongue
1. General sensation anter 2/3 - Ligual nerve (V3) post 1/3 - glosso (CN IX) 2. Special sensation anter 2/3 - chroda tympani (CN VII) post 1/3 - glosso (CN IX)
Arterial Supply of tongue
lingual artery from external carotid artery
Salivary Glands innervation
Parasympathetic innervation by facial nerve (CN VII)
Salivary Glands
Submandibular Gland
Sublingual Gland
Submandibular Gland
Duct opens on either side of lingual frenulum as the Sublingual papilla, named for its location on tongue at floor of mouth
Sublingual Gland
Lies in floor of the mouth
Opens into floor of mouth as many ducts
