Subdivisions
Vestibule - area of larynx above vestibular fold
Ventricle - lateral extensions of larynx btw vocal and vestibular folds
Infraglottic cavity - area of larynx below vocal folds
Extrinsic Muscles
Suprahyoid and Infrahyoid
Intrinsic Muscles
Posterior Cricoarytenoid
Lateral Cricoarytenoid and Transverse Arytenoid
Cricothyroid
Thyroartenoid and vocalis
Posterior Cricoarytenoid - Action
Abducts (opens) vocal folds
Lateral Cricoarytenoid and Transverse Arytenoid - Action
Adducts (closes) the vocal folds
Cricothyroid - Action
Tenses (tightens) vocal folds
Thyroartenoid and vocalis
Relaxes the vocal folds
Vascular Supply
Superior and Inferior Laryngeal arteries off the Superior and Inferior Thyroid arteries
Nerve Supply - Sensory
Branches of Vagus -
- Internal Laryngeal nerve (mucous membranes from superior surface of vocal folds and area above)
- Recurrent Laryngeal nerve (mucous membranes from inferior surface of vocal folds and area below)
Nerve Supply - Motor
Branches of Vagus -
- External Laryngeal nerve (cricothyroid only)
- Recurrent Laryngeal nerve (all intrinsic muscles of larynx except cricothyroid)
