Opportunistic Mycoses Flashcards
1
Q
opportunistic mycoses definition
A
seldom cause disease without a predisposing factor
2
Q
Candidiasis disease patterns
A
- yeast
- Dog/Cats: exfoliative dermatitis, pruitis, alopecia
- Birds/Pigs: mycotic alimentitis, “thrush” (mouthful of cottage cheese)
- Horses/Cows: gastric ulceration
3
Q
Candidiasis treatment
A
- correct predisposing conditions
- fluconazole, miconazole, flucytosine
- topical chlorhexidine
4
Q
Aspergillosis disease patterns?
A
- mold
- Canine: nasal aspergillosis
- Equine: pulmonary aspergillosis, guttural pouch mycosis and fatal hemorrhage
- Avian: mycotic pneumonia and airsacculitis, “brooder pneumonia”
5
Q
Aspergillosis treatment?
A
- Keratomycosis: debridement, topical antifungals
- Dogs: long term fluconazole, tx is difficult
- Horses: poor prognosis with carotid erosion, long term itraconazole
6
Q
Yeasts vs. molds vs. dimorphic fungi
A
- Yeasts: single cells
- Molds: mulitcellular filamentous hyphae with conidia
- Dimorphic: yeast (37 C) or mold (25 C) morphology, cause primary systemic mycoses
7
Q
Cutaneous vs. subcutaneous vs. systemic mycoses?
A
- Cutaneous: hair, nails, and skin
- Subcutaneous: dermis, bone, muscle, and fascia
- Systemic: spread through blood to secondary site
