Ophthalmology Flashcards
Most common cause of amblyopia
Strabismus
Alternatively, congenital cataract
Vision impairment resulting from interference with imaging processing in the brain i.e. Overlapping images causing suppression of one image and thus cortical blindness
Amblyopia
Reflection from a light comes from different areas of the cornea in each eye
Tx?
Strabismus
Surgical correction or amblyopia results
Strabismus that occurs later in infancy
Tx?
Exaggerated convergence caused by refraction difficulties
Corrective glasses resolves the problem
Possible causes of a white pupil in a baby (2)
Retinoblastoma
Congenital cataract
Correction required to avoid amblyopia
Sudden severe eye pain in the evening
Frontal headache
Halos around lights
Unreactive pupil with cloudy cornea
Acute angle closure glaucoma
Eyeball will feel hard as a rock
Management of acute angle closure glaucoma before emergency surgery
Systemic carbonic anhydrase inhibitor
Topical beta-blockers, alpha-2 agonists
Mannitol, pilocarpine
Hot, tender, red, swollen eyelids
Fixed dilated pupil, limited motion
Febrile
Dx, tx?
Orbital cellulitis
CT scan, drainage
Tx for chemical burns of the eye
Massive irrigation with plain H2O
pH testing after continued irrigation in ED
Pt sees flashes of light, floaters, or dark spots in field of vision
Tx?
Retinal detachment
Laser spot welding
Sudden vision loss in one eye
Elderly
Tx?
Embolic occlusion of retinal artery
Breath into paper bag, press hard repeatedly on eye to dislodge into more distal location sparing vision that will be lost within 30 mins
