What is job production
Job production is where a single product is made at a time
• Products are made for a specific client or customer
What is batch production
Batch production is where small quantities of identical products are made
• Machines can be easily changed to make a different batch
What is flow production
Flow production means that products are made in huge quantities
• Products are produced on a continuous production line in a factory which often runs 24/7
Advantages and disadvantages of job production
A- Bespoke, unique, one off, to customers measurements or specifications e.g. a kitchen
A- Higher prices can be charged to the customers
D-Skilled labour and craftsmen are expensive
D- Wide range of tools may be required
Advantages and disadvantages of batch production
A- Flexibility because production can be changed to meet customer needs or fluctuations in demand
A- Standard production of items means it can be mechanised, this means less labour involved than in a job production process
D-Workers may be less motivated with repetitive work
D- If one batch takes too long the other batches will all be held up too
Advantages and disadvantages of flow production
A-larger quantities which means they can bulk buy raw materials and save money
A- Automated and computerised production means improved quality and more complex designs can be made in shorter times
D-High costs to buy the factory and machinery
D-Break downs and lost production can be costly
