What are the purpose to Military Symbols
- Allows commanders and staffs to display certain elements of the operational picture
- THE COMBINATION OF UNIT AND EQUIPMENT SYMBOLS AND GRAPHIC CONTROL MEASURES AS WELL AS OTHER MILITARY SYMBOLS CREATES AN ESSENTIAL TOOL FOR QUICKLY PORTRAYING MILITARY OPERATIONS.
- SITUATION MAPS, OVERLAYS AND ANNOTATED AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS ARE USED TO EXPRESS AN OPERATION PLAN OR ORDER, CONCEPT, OR FRIENDLY OR HOSTILE (ENEMY) SITUATION.

What are graphic control measures
Graphic control measures are graphic directives given by a commander to subordinate commanders to assign responsibilities, coordinate fire and maneuver, and control combat operations.

Black - Friendly
Red - Hostile (ENY if you don’t have red)
Green - Neutral (NEU)
Yellow - Unknown (UNK)
Draw all obstacles in green, if not available draw in black
What are the labeling rules
All text should be UPPER CASE
You should be able to read everything when the bottom of the overlay is closest to the reader
Labeling on an angle should be readable when turned a quarter of a turn (90’) clockwise or counter clockwise
