Offensive-Defensive Operations Flashcards
What are Full Spectrum Operations
Full spectrum operations include
Offense, Defense, Stability, and Civil Support Operations. Missions in any environment require Army forces to be prepared to conduct any combination of these operations
What is Doctrine
A body of though on how Army forces intend to operate as an integral part of a joint force
What does Doctrine consist of
Fundamental Principles
Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures
Terms and Symbols
Define Tactics
The employment of Units in combat. It includes the ordered arrangement and maneuver of units in relation to each other, the terrain and the enemy to translate potential combat power into victorious battles and engagements.
Define the three parts of the Art of Tactics
The creative way to accomplish assigned missions.
Decision making under adverse conditions.
Understanding the affects of combat on the Soldier
Define the Science of Tactics
Encompasses the understanding of those military aspects of tactics- capabilities, techniques, and procedures that can be measured and codified.
Define Techniques
Non-prescriptive ways or methods used to perform missions, functions, or tasks.
Define Procedures
Standard, detailed steps that prescribe how to perform specific tasks
What’s the effect of Army Doctrine
Army forces conduct operations according to Army doctrine and
Doctrine guides operational planning

What are the Levels of War
Strategic
Operational
Tactical
Define Strategic War
THE LEVEL OF WAR AT WHICH A NATION OFTEN AS ONE OF A GROUP OF NATIONS DETERMINES NATIONAL & MULTINATIONAL SECURITY OBJECTIVES AND GUIDANCE AND DEVELOPS AND USES NATIONAL RESOURCES TO ACCOMPLISH THEM.
Define Operational War
THE OPERATIONAL LEVEL LINKS EMPLOYING TACTICAL FORCES TO ACHIEVING THE STRATEGIC END STATE. AT THE OPERATIONAL LEVEL, COMMANDERS CONDUCT CAMPAIGNS AND MAJOR OPERATIONS TO ESTABLISH CONDITIONS THAT DEFINE THAT END STATE
Define Tactical War
THE TACTICAL-LEVEL COMMANDERS USE COMBAT POWER IN BATTLES, ENGAGEMENTS, AND SMALL-UNIT ACTIONS.

What are the Principles of War
Objective
Offensive
Mass
Economy of Force
Maneuver
Unity of Command
Security
Surprise
Simplicity
Define Objective in War
DIRECT EVERY MILITARY OPERATION TOWARDS A CLEARLY DEFINED, DECISIVE AND ATTAINABLE OBJECTIVE.
Define Offensive
Seize, Retain, and Exploit the Initiative
Seizing the initiative dictates the nature, scope, and tempo of an operation
Offensive Operations are essential to maintain the freedom of action necessary for success, exploit vulnerabilities and react to rapidly changing situations and unexpected developments.
Define Mass
Concentrate the effects of combat power at the decisive place and time
Commanders mass the effects of combat power in time and space to achieve both destructive and constructive results.
Define Economy of Force
Allocate minimum essential combat power to secondary efforts
Economy of Force is the reciprocal of Mass
Define Maneuver
Place the enemy in a disadvantageous position through the flexible application of combat power
Effective maneuver keeps the enemy forces off balance by making them confront new problems and new dangers faster than he can deal with them
Army forces gain and preserve freedom of action, reduce vulnerability and exploit success through maneuver
Define Unity of Command
For every objective, ensure unity of effort under one responsible commander
Unity of command means a single commander directs and coordinates the action of all forces toward a common objective
Define Security
Never permit the enemy to acquire an unexpected advantage
Security results from the measures a command takes to protect itself from surprise, interference, sabotage and threats
Define Surprise
Strike the enemy at a time and place or in a manner for which he is unprepared
Surprise is the reciprocal of Security
Factors contributing to surprise include speed, operation security and asymmetric capabilities
