Coordinates all operations of your computer.

Roles of the operating system
Memory management-Decides what processes get memory, how its distributed, and when to take away memory
Security- antivirus and software to help protect your personal computer from threats
running ongoing checks for attacks on the system and gathering data to help with oncoming cyberattacks
Networking-Controls access to resources and devices on the network (backing up files, managing remote printing, user management)
Device drivers- manage peripheral devices by using a driver to link digital device with peripheral
Multitasking- Allowing the user to run more than one application on the operating system at a time (this is done when the operating system allocates resources to each app)

Support may be slow, could have indirect costs involved
