Data protection act 1998
Aims to protect personal data
Copying someones data is morally and ethically inappropriate
Gives rights to the individual on what data is collected, how businesses use the data
Causes organizations to have increased costs and requirements for data security
Individuals can be compensated if they are harmed by their stolen data
offenders can be fined up to 500k
Computer misuse act 1990
Protects others from attacks on IT systems used to gain unauthorized access to steal/ cause damage to data
covers threats such as malware/hacking
Allows for organization computers to be more secure as they are deterred by the legal repercussions of failing to comply with this act
Offenders can face up to 10 years in prison
Copyright and patents act 1988
Sets out rules for copyright and artistic licenses relating to all media (ownership, broadcasting, films, rentals, accessibility
Protects the rights of the work of creators
Prevents others from distributing work without permission
Health and safety act (Dse)
Sets out rules in relation to any device that has a graphic display screen due to its implications
Require organizations to make sure that display equipment meet standards that are useful for workers
Aims to reduce risk of RSI(Insists that regular breaks should be taken in order to prevent this occurring, and urges business to look at the implications)
Police and justice act
Expands on the computer misuse act, covers denial of service attacks (DOS, which aims to disrupt an IT system)
Penalty by imprisonment
Making explicit content/ supplying, distributing offensive material
