Operant Conditioning Flashcards
What is operant conditioning
A behaviourist and a form of associationist learning
Who was the main physiologist behind operant conditioning
BF skinner
What did BF skinner believe
Learning through the “consequences” of our actions, the consequences being in the coaching environment
What experiment did BF skinner do
The rat in a box experiment
Explain the experiment of the rat in the box experiment by BF skinner
The rat presses the leaver and a food pellet falls out, the food delivery was linked (associated) to pressing the lever
Another rat would get eletric current through the bottom of the box but when it changed the leaver the current would stop. This would also form a association with the lever and current
What is an SR bond
Stimulus response
A set stimilus wil illicit a set repsonse. The stimulus can be grooved and you can manipulate the environment to learn the response
What does positive reinforcement do to the SR bond
Strengthn it
What does negative reinforcement do to the SR bond
Forms the bond
What is punishment
Any action that decreases probability of the response occurring again
What is negative reinforcement
The removal of praise when the response is incorrect
What is positive reinforcement
It involves praise and reward when the response is correct
What is reinforcement
Any action that increases the probabilities of a response occurring again
What happens if too much punishment is used
Lack of motivation
Elite performers will be more benefited by this
What is the problem with too much positive reinforcement
It will loose effect and devalue the reward
What is the dominant response first
Usually incorrect but it gets turned to a correct response through reinforcement
How can we ensure correct repsponses
Through manipulating the environment, using trial and error learning and reinforcement
