Chronic optic neuropathy associated with raised intraocular pressure
What is the pathophysiology of open angle glaucoma?
Raised intra-ocular pressure leads to retinal ganglion cell death
What are risk factors for open angle glaucoma?
Raised IOP FHx Increasing age Black race HTN Myopia
What are the symptoms of open angle glaucoma?
Mainly asymptomatic
Loss of peripheral vision
What are the signs of open angle glaucoma?
Optic nerve damage (glaucomatous disc cupping)
Visual field loss
Raised IOP
How is open angle glaucoma investigated?
Fundoscopy
What is seen on fundoscopy in open angle glaucoma?
Optic disc cupping
Optic disc pallor
Bayonetting of vessels
Cup notching
How can open angle glaucoma be screened for?
Advise patients >40y to have regular eye checks
How is open angle glaucoma managed medically?
Topical prostaglandin analogue
Topical B blocker
Topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitor
Topical alpha agonist
How can open angle glaucoma be managed surgically?
Trabeculectomy
