Macular Degeneration Flashcards
What is macular degeneration?
Degeneration of the central retina
What are the types of macular degermation?
Dry
Wet
What is dry macular degeneration?
Atrophy of the neuroretina
Cells of the macula break down resulting in drusen formation
What are drusen?
Yellow lipid deposits
What is wet macular degeneration?
Drusen lifts the retinal pigment epithelium from blood supply
Growth of new blood vessels from the choroid -> irreversible loss of central vision
What are the risk factors for macular degermation?
Increasing age
FHx
Smoking
HTN
What are the features of macular degeneration?
Loss of central vision
Reduction in visual acuity
What are the signs of dry macular degeneration?
Drusen deposits
Atrophy
What are the signs of wet macular degeneration?
Drusen depostis
Macular oedema
Retinal haemorrhage
How is dry macular degeneration managed?
AREDs food supplement
- zinc
- vits ACE
How is wet macular degeneration managed?
anti - VEGF
