Q

Problems created by the one child policy

A

1) Women were forced to have abortions, as late as 9 months
2) Women were placed under tremendous pressure from their families, work mates, the granny police and their own conscience
3) Local officials and the central government had power over people’s private lives
4) Chinese society preferred boys over girls and so some girls were left in orphanages or left to die (female infanticide) in the hope of having a boy second time round
5) There are now over 15 million orphans in China, most of which are girls
6) The policy was difficult to enforce on rural areas
7) Chinese children gained a reputation for being spoilt ‘little emperors’
