Define land reform
A
The redistribution of land and can be used to overcome the inefficiencies in the use of land and labour

What does land reform include?
A
- Breaking down large estates, redistributing land to individual farmers or landless people e.g. Latinfundia to Minifundia in the Mezzogiorno, Italy
- Consolidation of smell fragmented farms (due to inheritance laws in some LEDCs)
- Moving land into state ownership

What have poor farmers joined in Brazil?
A
The Movimento dos Sem Terra (MST) (the landless movement)

What has the MST organised?
A
Protests and property invasions, sometimes risking violent confrontation as so much arable land is controlled by a few wealthy families

A
They began to redistribute land on a huge scale in the 1990s
