What’s the olfactory nerve responsible for?

A
  • Sense of smell
  • Peripheral processes and cell bodies located in the olfactory epithelium of the nasal cavity (blue shade)
  • Fibers pass through the cribriform plate to the olfactory bulb (synapse and first processing takes place)
  • Fibers pass through the olfactory tracts and terminate in the cortex

What does the olfactory nerve connect to?

A
  • The olfactory nerve connects with several parts of the brain
  • It also links to the parts of the brain that triggers the emotional or memory reaction to a familiar smell

Describe the testing of the olfactory nerve

A

• Test patency of each nostril

• Avoid using irritating smells – menthol,ammonia,etc.
– will affect Trigeminal V1

• Use coffee, lemon/ vanilla extract

• Anosmia: loss of smell
– Traumaticbraininjury(shearing force)
– Commoncold
– Allergies
– Nasalpolyps
– Mucosalthickening
– Other
