Older Brain Structures Flashcards
oldest part of the brain beginning
where the spinal cord swells & enters the skull.
- Responsible for automatic, survival functions
Brainstem
The base of the brainstem; controls heart
rate and breathing
Medulla
helps coordinate movement & controls sleep
Pons
- Runs through the brainstem from the spinal cord to the
thalamus- Filters incoming stimuli, relays important info, &
controls arousal
- Filters incoming stimuli, relays important info, &
Reticular Formation
Regulates voluntary movement and balance
and involved in some nonverbal learning
- means “little brain”
- located at the rear of the brainstem
Cerebellum
The brain’s sensory control center; directs sensory messages to the sensory areas in the cortex & transmits replies
to the cerebellum & medulla.
Thalamus
Located below the cerebral hemispheres and controls our emotions and drives
Limbic System
- Controls survival drives like
eating, drinking, & body temp.
- “Hypo” means “under”
- Located under the Thalamus
Hypothalamus
Controls the storage of new memories
of facts & events
Hippocampus
Enable aggression
& fear; controls the arousal
& regulation of emotions
Amygdala
