Depth Perception Flashcards
The ability to see objects in 3-D although images that strike the retina are 2-D
Depth perception
A laboratory device for testing depth perception in infants and young animals
Visual Cliff
Depth cues that depend on the use of two eyes
Binocular Cues
A binocular cue that perceives depth between two angles of one object
Retinal Disparity
Depth cues available to each eye separately.
Monocular cues
We perceive objects higher in our field of vision as farther away.
Relative Height
Two objects are similar in size but the one farther away is perceived to be smaller.
Relative size
If one object partially blocks our view of another, we perceive it as closer
Interposition
As we move, objects that are actually stable may appear to move
Relative motion
Parallel lines appear to meet in the distance
Linear perspective
A gradient change in the texture of the visual field; objects with finer, less detailed textures are perceived as more distant.
Texture Gradient
We perceive hazy objects to be farther away.
Relative clarity
An illusion of movement is created when two or more adjacent lights blink on and off in quick succession.
