OKT Flashcards
what is the MIC?
the minimum inhibitory concentration is the lowest concentration of antimicrobial agent at which visible growth of the microbes is prevented
what are disadvantages of ABs?
resistance and toxicity
what is trimethoprim?
it is used to treat UTIs and inhibit DNA synthesis in bacteria
what tends to cause acute viral infections?
RNA viruses
what is used to select ABs?
a stepwise process
when should antivirals be given?
they tend to work best soon after symptoms develop
what is needed in the first step of the stepwise process?
the likely organisms in order to chose the right empirical antimicrobial agent
what will resistance genes do?
they will confer a survival advantage to a pathological microorganism that is growing in the presence of a subinhibitory concentration of ABs
what are lamivudine and tenofovir?
similar to AZT they are NRTIs that are also active against Hep B which is a chronic liver infection
what is HAART?
it is a lifelong treatment for HIV
what is AZT?
it is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor that is used in HIV infection
what is the antimicrobial spectrum?
it is the range within which the bacteria or fungi are likely to be sensitive to a particular group of antibacterial or fungal agents
what are azoles?
they are a group of antifungal membrane agents
what is an ideal target in bacteria for selective toxicity?
the cell wall synthesis in gram positive and negative bacteria as it is not present in animal cells so cannot harm human cells
what do antivirals do?
block viral replication
