Q

what is the purpose of nasogastric tubes

A
1. Allow drainage of the contents of the stomach
– Decompress stomach for ventilation
– Gastric lavage (overdose)
– Bleeding
– Air insufflation removal

2.Provide a safe access route to the
gastrointestinal tract for the safe administration
of fluids, drugs and / or nutrients.

  1. Reduce/stop life threatening bleeding due to
esophageal or stomach varices when other
    methods are unavailable/unsuccessful
  2. Measure pressure in the esophagus for
    transpulmonary pressure monitoring
  3. Provide access to phrenic nerve for neurally
    adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA)
