POP mnemonic - be aware of when dealing with aggressive behaviour

Person
Object
Place

Person:-

  • where their hands are - keep On display
  • Under influence of drugs / alcohol or mentally ill - they may be unpredictable / irrational
  • their actions - threats/shouting abuse
  • consider other persons or friends of the individual who are nearby and could pose a danger

Objects:-

  • Knives/guns etc
  • pens/ keys / scissors / darts / screwdrivers/ pencils

Place:-

  • where the incident is, such as :
  • Building - places to hide
  • kitchen - dangerous utensils
  • building site - health and safety issues and access to variety of weapons

Levels of resistance?

A
  • If the suspect is compliant or not
  • If they refuse to comply verbally or through body language
  • If they simply sit/stand/lie still and won’t move (passive resistance)
  • they pull away or push the officer (but no attempt to strike) (active resistance)
  • if they physically attack the officer (aggressive resistance)
  • they commit an assault which present possibility of serious injury/ death (aggravated resistance)
