What are the three general principles to follow when starting an enquiry?
gather all relevant information
pay attention to detail
assess possible risks to the person
Who co-ordinates the missing persons cases?
The missing persons unit (MPU) at PNHQ.
What is the definition of a missing person?
Any person who is reported missing to police.
Whose whereabouts are unknown.
AND
There are fears for the safety, or concerns for the welfare, of that person.
What are the three factors to determine fears for safety?
Zones of safety - are they outside of their usual surroundings and possibly unable to cope.
Age - Age of the person
Circumstances - has the person gone missing in circumstances that are unusual, dangerous or suspicious.
What are the four categories of missing person?
Voluntary - runaways
Involuntary - Missing against their will
Lost - temporarily dis-orientated
Missing overseas - foreign nationals missing in NZ and NZers missing in other countries
Who can report someone as missing to Police?
Anybody can report any person missing.
What is the Police missing persons form called?
Pol62
What information do you require when starting a Pol62?
Physical appearance of the person State of mental and physical health Doctor and dentist Bank accounts Passport and IRD numbers Occupation
What other information do you need?
When, where and by whom was the person last seen
What was the person wearing
Where the person might have gone. Obtain the names of friends and associates.
Possible reason for his disappearance
Whether the person ahs gone missing before
What enquiries the friends and family have already made
Obtain a photo
What form must you give the informant?
A Pol64, missing person acknowledgement form.
What are the case file review dates?
After 3 days After 14 days After 30 days After 90 days After 1 year
