collateral blood vessels that occur in the wall of the oesophagus as a result of portal hypertension

- Liver cirrhosis - fibrosis of the liver causes portal hypertension and varices

A

Symptoms of oesophageal varices?
A
/asymptomatic until bleed/
potential signs of chronic liver failure present
- fresh haematuria
- malena - black tarry stool
- hypovolaemic shock

What are the results of blood tests?
A
- Low haemoglobin

What is the management for oesophageal varices?
A
1.urgent resus with fluids and blood transfusion
- Stop bleeding ;
- variceal band ligation
- sclerotherapy - Vasopressor agents - Terlipressin
