What are some communication issues that can impact a nurse’s establishment of rapport with a residential school survivor?
- There may be historical mistrust of health care
- There may be language barriers that can affect care & rapport

what is the legal difference between a refugee and immigrant?
Refugee: Person who has fled their home country due to an experience/fear of persecution & received status
Immigrant: A person from another country who has been accepted for residency by a government
What does it mean for two people to develop a “Third Culture”?
To better enhance understanding when communicating, people from different cultural backgrounds may create a third, “new” culture by joining aspects of both of their own, to make a comprehensive and inclusive culture

Cognitively: affects memory (esp. short-term), reasoning and thought processes are severely impacted
Emotionally: Decreased expression, being withdrawn, verbal cues negatively impacted
Behaviourally: Restlessness, outburts, repeating actions and questions
Physically: Coordination, mobility, nonverbal cues negatively impacted

Physically: Tremors, writing and nonverbal cues negatively impacted. Rigidity, off-balance
Verbally: Difficulty speaking, quiet or muffled speech

- Positive facial contact
- Big gestures to hold their attention
