What is an interpersonal relationship?
Perceptions shared between 2 people of an ongoing connection that results in the development of relational expectations, varying in intimacy
what is intimacy?
the degree to which a person’s sense of self is accepted & confirmed by another person
What is a symmetric relationship?
An attempt to have the same power
What is a complementary relationship?
An uneven divide of power. Can be competitive or submissive
Define these 5 different types of power:
- Legitimate power
- Referent power
- Expert power
- Reward power
- Coercive power
- Legitimate power: respect for the position held
- Referent power: Attraction to another
- Expert power: Knowledge or experience
- Reward power: Ability of another to satisfy our needs and provide reward
- Coercive power: The use of sanctions or punishment to influence others
