Native Species
Animal or plant naturally occurring in area, keeps invasive species population down and helps economy
Global Warming
Important since affects wildlife, people, & the environment, caused solely by humans definition
Atoll
Ring of coral islands & reefs surrounding a shallow body of ocean water, formed by when volcano rises to sea level on top of underground volcano
Lagoon
A body of shallow water partly cut off from the ocean by low-lying rock, sand, or coral reefs, formed when an island completely subsides into water leaving a ring of coral to continue to grow
Continental Drift
Continents slowly drifting as the tectonic plates that they sit on move, important because if world was still one continent, history would be completely different
Endangered Species
Animals or plants in danger of dying out in immediate future, ecosystem will be disturbed if they die out
Threatened species
Animals likely to become endangered if not protected, important to take action before extinction
Ice Shelves
Large floating sheets of ice that is attached to coast, extending for hundreds of miles, sea level rises when they crumble
Biome
Large ecosystem home to animals, plants, and other life, creating habitats and ecosystems for lots of nature
Greenhouse effect
Creates global warming & allows earth to stay at livable temperature
Volcano islands
An island with a volcano, and it deposits fertile land and hot water and energy to communities
Exotic species
Animals brought from somewhere else, affects other species forcing them to adapt
Names of 4 regions of Oceania, what they mean and what they reveal about their history
Micronesia, “Tiny Islands”, low lying & coral.
Melanesia, “Black Islands” clustered off coast of Australia
Polynesia “Many islands”, Triangle: Hawaii, New Zealand
Australasia: Australia, New Zealand, neighboring islands.
Significant because Europeans named these islands, not the natives
What does aborigine mean, how long did first humans migrate to Australia & how long did aboriginal populations live free of European interference?
Means original people in location, migrated 50,000 years ago, lived roughly 50,000 years without contact
What is uluru and why is is it significant
Large mountain in the outback discovered n 1985 & locals believe it has ancestral spirits on it
What do boomerang & didgeridoo reveal about aboriginal culture
Reveals they had specialization, and culture from the start
Why should the arrival of Dutch explorers not be too surprising?
East India Trade in Indonesia led them to be right next to Australia
What is Pangea and how it is formed
More than 270 million years ago, earth joined together in one supercontinent to Pangea. 200 million years ago, tectonic plates began to move and landmass breaks apart
