The Middle Ages begin when Western Rome fell, Charlemagne’s army, the franks, laid foundation for feudalism since the knights got land for royal service and showed an alternative way to survive
Feudalism, how did it work, what was its social hierarchy and purpose?
Feudalism was a structural system where land is granted in exchange for services, their social hierarchy put kings at the top, then nobles, knights, and peasants, it’s purpose was to make protection and a structure of a system without the Roman empire
Why was it called the dark ages? What was so dark?
It was called the dark ages because it was a bad time to be alive. There was a decline in central government, trade, cities(people), money, learning, Latin, & communication
Why was the plague called the Black Death
The victim’s had bubos on their body from the disease, which when it popped, left their body blackish
How did the plague arrive to Europe?
It arrived to Europe from trade routes carrying rats and fleas
How did the Black Death lead to an increase in democratic thought?
Flipped the social pyramid, because of population decrease, which gave more bargaining power for workers
Outside of Europe, what was this an age of? Why? How did Europe benefit?
It was the Age of Enlightenment, outside of the west people kept on learning. Baghdad was an example of them not being stopped learning. Europe benefited because their knowledge of the west was preserved and was kept our knowledge was kept
Name three factors that led to the decline of Feudalism
Black Death (favored the bottom of the social pyramid), Political changes (Habeas Corpus, First constitution shifted power to people & Magna Carta) and war (Technology with Longbow and needed armies because of the overpowering of the bow)
Why did the Hundred Years War start?
Feudalism gave land from France to England, and France wanted to take the land back
What changes did the Magna Carta promise to bring about in the English government
No one was above the law, Habeus Corpus gave people the right to not be sent to jail without a cause
What is the legacy of Joan of Arc?
She was a 17 year old peasant girl, and was called by the saints to fight, helped drive England from French soil when France was not really fighting back, but was charged with witchcraft and being a heretic, and was burned at stake. Then became a saint from the Roman Catholic Church
What happened to people who openly disobeyed the church?
They were burnt at a stake, or kicked out of church
Name two forms of Christianity that emerged during the 700s, how & why?
Roman Catholic Church & Eastern Orthodox Church. They emerged from Jesus Christ and the great schism. It started because the East banned icons while the West kept them
Who was Constantine? What was the Edict of Milan?
He was a Roman emperor and the edict was that Christian’s wouldn’t be persecuted in Rome anymore
