define obsession
repetitive thoughts, images, or urges

1) repetitive intrusive thoughts,images or urges
2) recurrent distressing thoughts,images or urges
3)Recognised as own thoughts,images or urges
4)recognised as silly,irrational and senseless by patient ( if not it is OCD with poor insight)
5) resisted by the individual but failed and becomes more anxious
6)restricts one’s daily activites ( functional impairment)
Compulsions define
repeated physical acts or mental acts which have the same characteristics of obsession
- done for temp relief
-must follow rules
-act prevents distress and dreaded event

types of OC
1) obsessions of contamination-cleansing rituals
2)obsessional doubts-checking ritual
3)obsessions of impending danger-counting or praying rituals
4)obsessions of symmetry- arranging n rearranging rituals
5)obsessional rumination- endless questions in mind cant stop
6)obsessional blasphemy- bad thoughts about one’s own religion
7) obsession of sexual themes- thought or images of sexual content
8) obsessions of death
9)hypochondriacal obsessions-intrusive thoughts of one developing a serious illness
10)obsessional images-repeated visualizing unpleasant scene in mind
11)obsessional urges- repeated urge to do something embarrassing which patient is aware not to be done( naked,vulgar words)
screening questions
1) do u have repeated thoughts keep intruding your mind
2) how often?
3)Do u have control over them?
4)what is the content of these thoughts
5) are they same content or multiple content?
6)are these your own thoughts, do u believe that they are inserted by an external force
7) do u think that the thought is silly,irrational or genuine
8) how to u fell when having this thoughts?
9)do u do anything repeatedly to reduce the distress? how does it help
10) how do these symptoms affect your daily life (dysfunction and distress)
comorbid psychiatric disorders

-substance use disorder
-psychosis
-eating disorder ( bulimia,anoreaxia)
-Tourette disorder in childhood/ adolescence
