define mood disorders
psychiatric disorders in which the core fundamental symptoms is a disturbance in emotion
types of mood disorders
1) Unipolar mood disorder= unipolar depression/Major Depressive disorder
2) Bipolar mood disorder
3)Persistent mood disorder
- persistently sad for 2 years: dysthymic disorder
-freq mild sadness:depression
-mild unusual happiness:hypomania
-mild unusual happiness for more than 2 years:cyclothymic disorder
4) Seasonal mood disorder
5) postpartum mood disorders
- post partum depression
- post partum blues
6) mood disorder (depression/elation) due to medical cond/prescribed med/ilicit drugs & alcohol
bipolar disorder define
pathological mood swings between mania and depression with periods of normalcy in between (euthymic state) the mood swings.
types of bipolar disorders
Bipolar I: mania ( and hypomania) n depression at dif times or same time (mixed phase).
Bipolalr II: predominantly depressive episodes with few hypomanic episodes
4 or more mood swings in 12 month period:Rapid cycling
cyclothymic disorder
mild depression and hypomania occur freq for 2 years or more
symptoms of Mania: HE DIG FAST
Happy (elated)/irritable
Energy level high
Distractibility
Indiscrete behaviour-exciting and pleasurable but with painful consequences.exp: reckless driving,spending spree,sexual disinhibition
Grandiosity- inflated self-esteem, boastful *not delulu yet
Flight of ideas- jumping from one topic to another quickly due to racing thoughts,other people cant keep up
Activity increases/hyperactive
Sleep need reduced-‘keeps working at night’
Talkativeness(pressure of speech)
elicit happiness or irritability and high energy level in mania
- have u ever had a period of about a week when u felt so happy n energetic that friends told that u talk too fast or that u were behaving differently/strangely?
-has there been a period when you were so irritable that u got into arguments?
elicit distractibility in mania
-were u having difficulty focussing or concentrating on a task because of your thought or things around u that draw your attention to the task and the tasks remain incomplete?
elicit indiscriminate behaviour in mania
-during that period how were u spending your time?
-were u doing anything that troubled your family?
-were u doing things that showed lack of judgement like driving too fast,running red lights or spending too much?
-at that time,were u involved sexual activities that were unusual for u?
elicit grandiosity in mania
-during this period,did u feel so confident,great and important?
-did u feel that u had special powers?
-did u feel more religious than normal for u?
elicit flight of ideas in mania
-during this period did u have so many thoughts that were racing in your mind that made u rapidly jump fr one topic to another while talking?
elicit activity increase in mania
-during this period, were u more active than usual?
-were u constantly working on projects/phoning people and even working into the night
elicit reduced sleep need in mania
-during that period,did u need less sleep?
-did u ever stay up all night doing all kind of things
-did your sleep less but still had a lot of energy?
elicit pressure of speech in mania
-during this period,were u talking more than usual for u?
- were u talking so much that people had to interrupt u and had difficulty to stop u fr talking?
comorbid disorders of mania
1)psychotic features
-delusions of grandeur: do u believe that u have special powers,a royal descent,a religious figure or a chosen by God to accomplish a task in this world?Explain
-delusions of persecution:do u believe that people are jealous of your abilities and power and are planning to endanger your life.Explain?
-hallucination:do u see things or hear voices that other people cannot see or hear.explain

diagnosis
BMD:single manic episode with or without psychotic features
BMD:currently in manic phase w/x psychotic features
BMD:currently in depressive phase w/x psychotic features
BMD:currently in hypomanic phase
BMD:currently euthymic
differentiate hypomania and mania
hypomania is milder n does not cause significant functional impairment
