What is OCD?
Disorder characterised by obsessions and compulsions
What are obsessions?
Unwanted, uncontrolled thoughts and intrusive images that the person finds very difficult to ignore
egodystonic thoughts
e.g. violent images that keep appearing in their mind
What are compulsions?
Repetitive actions the person feels they must do generating anxiety if they are not done
Often a way to handle their obsessions
What is the OCD cycle?
Obsessions
Anxiety
Compulsion
Temporary relief
What is diagnosis of OCD based on?
International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11)
What can be used to assess severity of symptoms of OCD?
Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale

How is Mild OCD managed?
Education and self-help resources
How is more significant OCD managed?
CBT with exposure and response prevention (ERP)
SSRIs
Clomipramine (TCA)
What is exposure and response prevention?
Gradually facing obsessive thoughts and anxiety without completing the compulsions
What infection can cause an increased chance of developing OCD?
Streptococcal throat infections
Therefore shows that OCD is due to a pathological cause
