To demonstrate loyalty and unity and because of the closed network of multi-plex connections formed by military bases in foreign countries

To exclude outsiders from confidential information or to keep the opposition ignorant to their line of argument

For efficiency and precision and to remain patient confidentiality

Flu - a bad cold / a specific virus
Paranoid - a fear of not being liked / a psychosis characterised by systemic delusions

What is frontstage and backstage language?
Frontstage - a professional identity e.g. speaking at work
Backstage - an informal identity e.g. talking to family

They studied a faculty meeting and determined that both status and gender determined whether or not they would be interrupted

Workplace conversations - they found they were goal-oriented and had restrictions on allowable contributions

Superiors demonstrate dominance whilst inferiors demonstrate deferential behaviour
What are discourse communities?
Membership means you know the appropriate topics, lexical choices to use and understand the status of who is in charge

Transactional interactions in which someone provides goods or services. They are performed as follows:
- Openings and offer
- Negotiations of service
- Closing and leave-taking
