He asked employees of each shop a question to which they would respond “fourth floor”. He then pretended not to hear and asked them to repeat themselves, recording the difference in their speech when it was spontaneous or careful.

Accent is dependent on not just where you are from but your social class (or the class you wish to be perceived as)
