Occlusion in relation to RPD Flashcards
ICP
Definition
Dictated by?
Intercuspal postion
Point of maximum intercuspation between the teeth
Largely dictated by cusp form
Centric relation
Definition
Muscles are
Jaw relationship
Relationship of the mandible to the maxilla when the condyles are seated in the midmost uppermost position in the glenoid fossa.
At most relaxed
RCP
Retruded contact position
First point of tooth contact in CENTRIC relation - when condyles fully seated
Usually on a molar or premolar
Occasionally RCP…
= ICP
Vertical dimension / OVD
Superior and inferior relationship of maxilla and mandible when in ICP
If ICP is stable it means it is…
REPRODUCIBLE
Is vertical dimension stable
Will not be stable if there are no remaining both contacts - no opposition
May be partially dentate/edentate in either arch
VDO may need changing to accommodate for required prostheses - centres around centric relation
Tooth prep and secondary impressions
If rest seats are required make sure they are cute to appropriate dimensions
Shallow, 1mm depth, enamel only
Framework try in for..
Co/Cr ONLY
Check metal framework fits well and is fully seated
Transfer to mouth and ensure that it fully seats paying attention to rest seats
Then check occlusion isn’t altered
Wax registration is on which kind of base
wax/shellac/acrylic
Should ideally be on metal framework for Co/Cr denture
Wax try in
Ensure the occlusion is identical to the wax registration
If there are discrepancies make any adjustments at this stage
This is the last chance to make changes!
Metal backing
Do tooth try in prior to metal frame try in to know where teeth will go
Summary of denture construction
Primary impressions
Wax registration if occlusion not obvious
(Tooth try-in if metal backings required)
Design denture
Tooth preparation (if required) and secondary impressions
Framework try-in (for cobalt-chrome dentures)
Wax registration (on metal frame for cobalt-chrome dentures)
Wax try-in
(Re-try if required)
