Predisposing factors for sleep apnoea?
Obesity, macroglossia( acromegaly, hypothyroidism, amyloidosis), large tonsil and marfans
Alcohol, smoking, male middle age
Features?
Episodes of apnoea, snoring, morning headache, waking up unrefreshed, daytime sleepiness, concentration problems, reduced oxygen saturation during sleep
Severe cases of sleep apnoea can cause?
Hypertension, heart failure, increased risk of MI and stroke, compensated respiratory acidosis
How to assess symptoms?
Epworth sleepiness scale
Diagnostic test for sleep apnoea?
Polysomnography
Management?
Correct reversible risk factors, CPAP or intra oral devices if CPAP not tolerated
DVLA should be informed. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty
