Q

When would it be common to have an absolute oversize situation?

A

crossbreeding = exotic calves out of domestic cow

like Angus cow trying to calve a Charolais-cross calf

Q

History/ Physical Examination

A

Prior intervention = Has the owner already tried to pull the calf? Do they know of any lacerations already?

Recumbent = obturator paralysis? milk fever?

Q

Restraint for Obstetrics

A

halter- tied low! (not hanging herself if she lays down)

Q

Epidural anesthesia

A
  • usually 2% lidocaine = enough to numb, but she can still be standing
  • cessation of straining
  • prevention of defecation

16
Q

Why do you need to watch when doing a repulsion?

A

It is possible to push calf through wall of uterus, especially if she’s been in labor for a while

17
Q

rotation

A

turning calf on long axis

18
Q

version

A
  • occurs more with mares
  • changes into longitudinal position from transverse
  • better to switch into a posterior instead of an anterior = only have to fight with back legs vs. front legs and neck
19
Q

Maximum force for forced extraction?

A
  • not more than 2-3 people

- not more than 600 to 800 pounds

20
Q

Placement of obstetrical chains?

A

loop above fetlock AND half-hitch around pastern

21
Q

Why should you never use eye hooks in live foals?

A

Foals’ heads are delicate and will fracture

22
Q

Why should you never put a loop on bottom jaw, especially if it’s a live calf?

A

Will break teeth

23
Q

How should the direction of pull be done?

A

Through an arc

This also puts the calf’s pelvis high up in the cow’s pelvis - gives a few more inches to work with

24
Q

When should aid be given for calving

A

Allow 2-3 hours after straining begins

Before this, it’s too early - aid can be detrimental

25
T/F: After the delivery of a calf, you should check for twin.
True
26
Location of C-sections
- Upper right flank - Upper left flank - Lower right flank - Lower left flank - Ventral midline/ paramedian
27
Advantage of a standing left upper flank c-section for dairy cows
- avoids large udder - easier than trying to balance her on her back - rumen's also on left
28
Advantage of a fetotomy?
Cow has no side incisions and will heal faster
29
Fetotomy Equipment
- Utrecht model fetotome - wire treader - wire saw handles - wire introducer - Krey hook - OB chains - Lubricant - Epidural equipment
30
How long should a c-section take? How long should a fetotomy take?
C-section= 30 minutes fetotomy = 20 minutes
31
T/F: If you start with a fetotomy, you can stop once you think you've got the calf small enough to fit through the birth canal.
False. FINISH the fetotomy! Will save time, effort, and headache of trying to only take off as much as you think is needed
32
After care for the dam
1. check for a second calf 2. check for lacerations 3. uterine boluses
